Lumbar Muscle Spasm

A lumbar muscle spasm happens when muscles in your lower back suddenly tighten and contract without control. This can cause sharp pain and make it hard to move.

  • Lower back pain
  • Muscle tightness
  • Stiffness
  • Sudden pain
  • Limited movement
  • Sudden tight or cramping pain in the lower back
  • A feeling that your back is locked or stuck
  • Pain when trying to move
  • Stiffness that makes it hard to bend
  • Lifting or sudden movement
  • Overuse during training
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Poor posture during activity
  • Did the pain start suddenly in your lower back?
  • Does your back feel tight or locked?
  • Does it hurt when you try to move?
  • Does the pain stay in your lower back?
  • Did it happen after movement or lifting?

  2. 2Use ice or heat 10–15 minutes

  4. 4Stay lightly active as tolerated
  5. 5Avoid bending or twisting
  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Pain spreading down the leg
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Significant weakness
  • Difficulty walking
  • Gradually return to activity
  • Do light stretching as pain improves
  • Strengthen core and back muscles
  • Maintain good posture
  • Avoid overuse
