Sternal Contusion

A bruise to the breastbone (sternum) caused by a direct blow to the front of the chest.

  • Central chest pain
  • Tenderness over sternum
  • Pain with deep breathing
  • Pain with movement
  • Bruising
  • A sore or sharp pain in the center of chest
  • Worse with pressure or movement
  • Pain when taking deep breaths
  • Direct hit to chest
  • Collision in contact sports
  • Fall onto chest
  • Is the pain directly in the center of your chest?
  • Does pressing on the area make it worse?
  • Did it start after a hit?

  • Severe chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Pain spreading to arm or jaw
  • Dizziness
  • Allow time for healing
  • Avoid repeat impact
  • Gradually return to activity
