Trochanteric bursitis happens when a fluid-filled sac on the outside of your hip becomes inflamed. This causes pain on the outer side of your hip, especially with movement or pressure.

Symptoms
  • Pain on the outside of the hip
  • Tenderness to touch
  • Pain with walking or stairs
  • Pain when lying on the side
  • Stiffness
What does Trochanteric Bursitis feel like?
  • Aching pain on the outside of the hip
  • Pain when lying on that side
  • Pain when walking or climbing stairs
  • Soreness that gets worse with activity
What are common causes of Trochanteric Bursitis?
  • Overuse from running or training
  • Repetitive hip movement
  • Pressure from lying on one side
  • Falls or direct impact to the hip

  • Does walking or stairs make it worse?
  • Did the pain build up over time?
  • Is the area tender to touch?

What to do now
  • Rest from activity
  • Avoid lying on the painful side
  • Ice 10–15 minutes
  • Avoid movements that cause pain
  • Stay lightly active as tolerated
  • Seek evaluation if pain is severe
Red flags
  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Significant swelling or redness
  • Inability to walk
  • Pain that does not improve
  • Fever
Recovery tips
  • Gradually return to activity
  • Strengthen hip and glute muscles
  • Improve movement or running form
  • Avoid overuse
  • Use proper warm-up before activity
