Turf Toe

Turf toe is a sprain of the ligaments surrounding the big toe joint. It occurs when the big toe bends upward beyond its normal range, commonly during sports played on artificial turf or firm surfaces.

  • Pain at the base of the big toe
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Difficulty pushing off while walking or running
  • Reduced big toe movement
  • Tenderness
  • Pain during sprinting or jumping
  • Sharp pain beneath the big toe
  • Pain when pushing off the foot
  • Toe feels stiff
  • Difficulty bending the big toe upward
  • Pain during running or jumping
  • Discomfort while walking barefoot
  • Hyperextension of the big toe

  • Basketball
  • Artificial turf
  • Sudden acceleration
  • Jumping and landing
  • Direct impact to the toe
  • Pain at the base of the big toe
  • Swelling after a sports injury

  • Strengthen the foot before returning to sports
  • Avoid pushing through pain
  • Return to play only when pain-free
